ARROYO SPENDS 1M PESOS IN U.S. DINNER IN TIME OF CORY’S WAKE
One of the United State’s most widely-read newspaper with a circulation of more than 650,000 copies published a news article about President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo paying $20,000 (more or less 1million pesos) dinner bill on August 2, 2009.
The news article solicited thousands of comments on the web and around the 
globe including fierce criticism from the Philippine church sector for the President’s “outlandish and insensitive” spending spree in time of Cory Aquino’s wake and while the whole nation is mourning for the death of the Former President.
Caloocan Bishop Deogracias Iniguez told media that people who were “entrusted by Lord” with much money should spend it wisely especially in the wake of global crisis that has been taking its toll on the country’s long-suffering poor.
“They should explain because they are the ones who are being put in a bad light,” Iniguez said in a telephone interview.
“Not only for their own protection but also for the country. It may be an issue that will divide us again,” he added.
Presidential spokesperson Cerge Remonde said over the weekend that Leyte Representative Ferdinand Martin Romualdez was the one who invited Arroyo and First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo to dinner at Le Cirque.
Remonde said Malacañang did not know how much the dinner was as it was the host who picked up the tab.
“Even if it is not public money, it is very imprudent,” Iniguez said.
